Street art in Valencia, Spain

Where’s the best place to find street art in Valencia?

I knew little about street art in Valencia before my last visit. Turns out it has a vibrant street art scene, with some walls in the city centre just covered in art…

I always enjoy taking a street art tour when I visit a new city. Good street art can be really inspiring, and understanding what’s behind it is always fascinating.

Valencia street art tour

The street art in Valencia is best discovered on a guided tour, that takes you to through the streets to find artowks you may not discover otherwise and learn about the artists, themes, and techniques.

It’s a free walking tour, meaning you tip the guide as much as you want at the end.

I booked this free tour in advance to guarantee my place.

We were a fairly large group of people, and our guide Andres was friendly, experienced, and enthusiastic about street art.

All in all, this street art tour was good fun and we certainly learnt a lot.

Valencia street art tour highlights

Here are some of the artworks I liked best during the Valencia street art tour.

There are a lot more, way too many to cover on a single tour or in a blog post, and naturally, every time you visit you’re going to see diffrent art on the walls.

Rosita mural - Valencia

This massive mural of a legendary Valencian singer, Rosita Amores, who was a start in the 1960s and 1970s. She became a symbl of freedom during the dictatorship years in spain.

It’s the kind of local knowlodge you want to get from your guide, otherwise you’re just seeing a woman on a pan 😉

These pieces are meant to be provocative, using familar classic art to tackle a contemporary issue, namely people who still have a problem with women breasfeeding in public.

The one of the right is titled “The Birth of Freedom” (after The birth of Venus).

I like how himsical this one is! It took me a moment to figure out that it’s Freddie Mercury. As a dinosaur. On a bike.

We spotted quite a few other cork bikes on nearby streets later in the tour by the same artist.

When we reached this flamingo, our guide showed us pictures of paintings by the same artist, all depicting funny animals.

At many other points during the tour, he took out his folder of images to show us more art from different places in the city or in other cities in Spain, so we could get a fuller picture.

Valencian street artists

I really love how these 3 pieces by 3 different artists blend together so seamlessly.

This impressive mural is part of the artist’s series of robot illustrations. The choice of colours leaves an impact and draws attention to this pieces on the street.

We went to see a music venue that has several beautiful commissioned murals decorating its outside wall.

They were all excellent, but my favourite one was by @lanenawapawapa on the theme of women in hollywood, with an obvious reference to Hitchcock.

Throught the tour we saw quite a few other artworks by the same artist, including this portrait which I really liked.

My takeaways from the Valencia street art tour

One of the best things about this tour is that by the end of it, all of us could recognise the unique styles of each street artist and even name them, just by looking at random pieces on any wall around us.

I also liked that our guide handed us lists of the artists’ names and handles and encouraged us to follow them on social media.

The bunadance and variety of street art in Valencia is quite incredible. The last time I saw so much street art in one place was on the street art tour in Paris I took last year.

In Valencia you’ll find any kind of street art technique you might think of, from the classic paste-ups and stencils, to more unique techniques like crochet or little scultures attached to the walls.

Our guide explained the themes and messages behind the artwork, especailly political and social meesages that are relevant to locals but would be comopletely out of context for a tourist.
