How to see a West End show on a weekend trip to London

Can you fit a West End show into your itinerary on a weekend trip to London?

A weekend in London is never quite long enough. Or any short London city break for that matter. But sometimes that’s all the time you’ve got.

In this guide I’ll help you plan your itinerary so you can enjoy a West End show even on a short London trip.

For some visitors the show actually becomes the anchor around which they plan the rest of the weekend.

Which London West End show is worth seeing on a weekend trip?

For a fun weekend trip, I recommend choosing a feel-good show, such as:

  • The Lion King: A visually spectacular musical that follows Simba’s journey from lost cub to king through unforgettable songs and puppetry.
  • Mamma Mia!: A joyful comedy set on a Greek island and packed with classic ABBA hits.
  • Moulin Rouge!: A dazzling, high-energy romance blending pop mashups, extravagant costumes, and Parisian cabaret glamour.

These are all high-energy musicals, visually strong and easy‑to‑follow.

If you’ve already seen them, browse what’s on at the West End.

For most weekend visitors, the Saturday matinee or Sunday matinee tends to work best.

Choosing a matinee is also a good idea of you’re going to the theatre with teenage kids and don’t want them to stay up too late.

Most West End shows last 1.5-2.5 hours, so the performance slot you choose affects the whole day around it.

Here’s a clear breakdown of your options:

Saturday matinee (usually 2:30 pm)

This is the most flexible option for a weekend visitor.

Your morning is free for sightseeing

You’re out of the theatre by 5:00 pm, and have the whole evening for dinner, drinks, a stroll, or some nightlife.

Saturday evening (usually 7:30 pm)

You get a full day of London before the show.

The trade-off is that you’ll finish around 10:30 pm, which limits what comes after.

London does have some late night restaurants and venues on Saturday, so you can still fit something else in after the show (if you have the energy).

Sunday matinee (usually 3pm)

A good option if you’re heading home Sunday evening.

It gives you a relaxed Sunday morning, the show as a satisfying trip finale, and you’re out in good time to catch a train or drive home without rushing.

If you’re flying home at night, this option works well too.

The one thing to check: not all shows run on Sundays, so confirm before planning around it.

Where to stay on a weekend trip to London

The theatre district is in central London, around Shaftesbury Avenue and Covent Garden.

To minimise travel time, your ideal bases should be Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Soho, or nearby. These areas are walkable to Theatreland.

There’s a good selection of hotels in these central areas.

Pre- and post-theatre dining: where to eat in the West End

Pre-theatre dining is a proper London tradition. Post-theatre dinner is also available for matinees.

Most restaurants near the theatre district offer a pre-theatre menu, typically a two or three course set meal at a lower price than the à la carte.

Book ahead for these meals. You can find a show + meal package for most popular West End shows, with restaurants that are very close to the venues.

How to plan your London weekend itinerary with a West End show

Now that you’ve decided on a show, where to stay, and where to eat nearby, here’s how to fit a West End show into your itinerary on a weekend London trip.

The Saturday matinee day

Start the morning without rushing.

The theatre district is easily reachable from most parts of central London, so you have time for a proper breakfast and a couple of hours of sightseeing before the show.

Aim to be in the Covent Garden or Soho area by 1pm. There are many restaurants nearby so you can have a relaxed lunch.

It can be pretty crowded on Saturdays, so I’d avoid Oxford Street (unless you really want to do some shopping there…).

I recommend you plan to get to the theatre around 2 pm (for a 2:30 pm start).

After the show, around 5:30 pm, and before dinner, you can take a walk along the South Bank.

Pass the illuminated London Eye and reach Southbank Centre. It often has all sorts of activities on Saturday afternoon, like shows and DJs.

You can walk along the Thames all the way to Tate Modern, which is free to enter and open till 9 pm on Saturdays. It also runs weekend events and performances.

Other spots worth visiting that are open late on Saturday include:

  • The View from the Shard – 360 degree views. Book ahead.
  • Frameless – an immersive art experience.
  • The National Portrait Gallery – a wonderful gallery, free to enter.

The Saturday evening show

The day is entirely yours to see London’s museums, markets, and other attractions until early evening.

Aim to be near the theatre district by 6 pm for a pre-theatre dinner. It’s best to book the restaurant in advance, as it’s a busy area on Saturday.

The Sunday matinee

Sunday morning in London is quieter than usual.

Some markets run on a Sunday and you can find a good Sunday brunch as well.

I recommend you arrive at the theatre at 2:30 pm for a 3 pm curtain.

You’ll finish around 5:00 pm, which leaves a comfortable window to collect bags, get to a station, and head home.

More tips on a theatre weekend in London

  • Book the show before you book anything else, as it anchors the itinerary.

  • Book the show ahead of time to get good seats.

  • Pick a show that’s under 2.5 hours long (including the interval).

  • If you’re not planning to stay near the West End, check the last train or last tube times before choosing an evening show.

  • Pre-order interval drinks to save time.

  • Before the show, read a short plot summary or watch a film‑version if available.
